In the middle of the world…Twinning Summit participants at the equator.
The Twinning Summit is coming to an end. We had a wonderful time in Kenya visiting the schools, fellow Lasallians, Brothers, having conversations with students, the time at the National Park, the wonderful hospitality of African culture and so much more. It was a rich experience and one that the Twinning Summit participants are looking forward to sharing. In the posts that follow will be some brief reflections by participants before departing this beautiful country, and impressive Lasallian family.

Slum where some of the college students live in Nakuru. Mud walls, tin roofs, no running water, no electricity.

This is one of the students we met at Mwangaza College in Nakuru, Kenya. She lives in a small one room home in a local slum. The community is protective but the risks are still high. She has to contend with not having any electricity, or running water. She also has issues with a leaking roof and rats that steal her food. She still goes to school everyday in hopes of transforming her life.

CDC a home for children from the slums. Virginia is the girl on the left. Her father is completely paralyzed and has no way of supporting the family. CDC does not charge any fees and depends completely on donors contributions. Virginia hopes to be a doctor some day.

Lunch time at St. Mary’s in Nyeri, Kenya. Aside from the school, they have an outreach program to street kids from the slums located across the street. Some just come for meals, some just for schooling, and some are now living there as well.

Selfie with Addad. He has such a protective and caring nature. As we walked around, he kept making sure we were ok. At one point we had a group of small children following us around and he made sure they went back home because we were about to get on a road with lots of traffic.

Moses leading us on a tour of the slums across from St. Mary’s. He was once a street kid living in the slum and now works at the school. He still lives in the same slum but is respected by the community there because he reaches out to those that are like he was when he was a child.

This hot dog vendor was once a street boy and went through St. Mary’s school. He has since started his own business and keeps an eye out for the children in the neighborhood and the school.
