District of Eastern North America
Christmas Card Contest Winner

During this wonderful time of year, we asked Art students from across the District to capture the spirit of the Christmas Season in their own creative way. This year’s theme is taken from the Meditations by Saint John Baptist de La Salle:

“Recognize Jesus beneath the poor rags of the children whom you have to instruct. Adore him in them. Love and honor these poor children after the example of the Magi. May faith lead you to do this with affection and zeal, because these children are the members of Jesus Christ. In this way the Savior will be pleased with you, and you will find him, because he always loved the poor.”

La Salle Academy freshman Anthony Anderson has won this year’s competition and his card will become the District Christmas card. Describing his award-winning entry Anthony said that in designing for a card required a rectangular shape and led him to think of a door.

“This is not the first time that Anthony’s art work has won awards. As a La Salle Academy PEGASUS 7/8 student he won two Scholastic Art Awards – a gold award as a seventh grader and a silver while in eighth grade,” said Fine Arts teacher Bill Connors. “He is an exceptional young man.”

Beyond his artistic talents, Anthony is talented in all academic subjects earning a 97 average as of mid-November this year.

“My favorite subjects other than art are biology and the other sciences. I also like architecture as it requires some artistic capabilities,” he said. “I also like math.” Anthony lives in Richmond, Rhode Island and rides to school with La Salle senior Grace Kelly whose mother works with Anthony’s mother at the West Greenwich library.
