4/15/2011 – Freeport, NY – “I really enjoyed coming here today”,said Bishop William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, as he concluded his visit to The De La Salle School.
He commented on the respectful demeanor of the students, the sincerity of their questions, and the poise of the student leaders who met with him. The accompanying photo captures a moment during the discussion involving the young men in the latter group.
David L., President of the Student Council, coordinated the well prepared presentation by his peers. A comprehensive overview of the vitality of the school’s life was conveyed by the student speakers. Reflecting on the experience of the day Russell noted how much he appreciated the Bishop caring enough to spend time with students. Anthony L. commented how relaxed the conversation with the Bishop was. Joel V. could tell how impressed the Bishop was with De La Salle students’ involvement in giving back to those less fortunate than themselves. Joel was also excited to meet someone who actually knew the Pope!
Prior to his time with the Student Council members, Bishop Murphy spent some time with each of the four De La Salle classes, answering their questions about his career and his ministry. An English class discussion about the book Black Potatoes prompted him to reflect on his Irish heritage. A request from a sixth grader to teach them a new prayer elicited a recitation of the Hail Holy Queen. When asked what bishops were his role models he cited two men who became popes, Paul VI and John Paul II. Our students agreed that it was a very special opportunity to have Bishop Murphy visit The De La Salle School.
