Br. Robert Schieler, FSC – 27th Superior General

Rome, Italy – Most recently serving as the General Councilor for the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN), Br. Robert Schieler, FSC has just been named the new Superior General for the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

A member of the Institute for 46 years, Br. Robert took the habit on September 1, 1968, in Ammendale, Maryland. Robert was first introduced to the Christian Brothers as a student at West Catholic Boys High School, and later at La Salle University (then La Salle College), both in Philadelphia, PA. During his time as a Brother, Robert has served as teacher, vice-principal, Auxiliary Visitor, Visitor, committee member and board member at a number of schools throughout the Legacy District of Baltimore, and the worldwide Institute, most notably in Manila, Iligan, and Bacolod, Philippines. The Philadelphia native holds masters degrees in European History (Notre Dame) and Asian Studies (University of Philippines) as well a doctorate in Educational Administration (University of Pennsylvania). Robert is the third American Brother to be named Superior General, the first from the District of Eastern North America!

Beginning immediately, Brother Robert will lead the largest order of religious Brothers in the Church dedicated to education. As the 27th successor to John Baptist de La Salle, Br. Robert is no stranger to leadership in Rome. One of the General Councilors to Superior General Br. Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria for the past seven years, Robert has also been a Capitulant at the 42nd, 43rd, and 44th General Chapters in 1993, 2000, and 2007, respectively.

We look forward to Brother Roberts’ leadership, and hold the new Superior General and the rest of the Chapter delegates in our prayers as they  continue to create and plan the ever evolving direction for our Lasallian educational mission!
