Brother Lawrence Dempsey, FSCWords of Remembrance for Brother Lawrence Dempsey, FSC

by Brother Charles Lackes, FSC

Quote: “You guys like sports?”

An Irish Catholic native from Southwest Philadelphia, Larry Dempsey’s life, faith, and formation were nurtured by his family, the IHM Sisters at Good Shepherd parish, and the Christian Brothers at West Catholic. After graduating in ’58, his journey began with the bus ride to “join the Brothers” at Ammendale, MD.

Energetic, with an outgoing personality, young Brother Lawrence quickly evolved into a dynamic Spanish teacher and popular wrestling and cross-country coach. He served long tours of duty in Pittsburgh and Jersey City.

An avid sports fan, while he enjoyed many games, a bet on the ponies excited him most. In later life, Larry returned home, settling in at St. Gabriel’s Hall, Phoenixville, PA. As a counselor, he welcomed new residents struggling to adjust
to school. Students quickly learned he could debate the skills of their favorite NBA star.

If Larry can choose his eternity, I imagine him with an Italian hoagie, a few cold Budweisers, and sitting in front of his computer, seriously considering the best picks for the coming season of “Fantasy Football.”

May he enjoy life forever!

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Brother Lawrence J. Dempsey, FSC
