Br. Edward “Ed” Shields, FSC, was called to become a Brother following his own Lasallian education. He continues to be a premier ambassador for the Brothers and is a living example of the mission set forth by Saint John Baptist de La Salle.

His first interaction with the Brothers occurred when he was a young man attending Mater Christi High School in Queens NY, followed by another Lasallian school, Manhattan College. God used the influence of the Brothers of the Christian Schools to call Ed to begin his formation.

During his nearly four decades at Saint Gabriel’s School in Queens, NY—as a teacher, vice principal, then principal—his presence was a blessing not only to the school but also to the parish and the neighborhood. He was greatly involved with the sports program and was a man of the community. Any walk through the neighborhood was slowed by his frequent pauses to talk with alumni, parishioners, and neighbors.

The vocation of the Brother is central to Ed’s whole being. It is always in the front of his mind when he encounters anyone that God may be calling to become a Brother. When Ed meets such a man, he maintains strong contact with him and helps him discern how God may be calling him.

Ed is also a gifted storyteller who contributes mightily to the quality of community life the Brothers share. His stories inspire the listener to grow deeper in faith and service to others. At the Brothers’ community, Ed is always willing to lend a hand, and he constantly reminds the community that a faithful life of prayer, dialogue, support, and a focus on mission are priorities. His mentorship of young Brothers, along with his vocation-based career, are a source of pride and joy for all who know him.
