I first met Steve in the summer of 1958. I was a new postulant entering the novitiate at Barrytown, NY. Steve was a seasoned novice. I saw him as an enthusiastic young Brother who had a great desire to be a teacher.

During our college years, I observed him as a very quiet and reserved Brother. After we graduated, I lost contact with him until I was assigned to La Salle Institute where Steve taught math. I recall how he loved going over to the school where he would mingle with the students and lay teachers. Steve had several close friends among the faculty, one of whom was Shirley Renzia, a language teacher, with whom he kept in contact for a long time after he came here to CBA. He also liked to visit Tommy Lynch frequently. He really looked forward to these visits as well as those with his loving family.

I recall that he was in charge of our first computer room which was located in a small room at the end of the second floor corridor. It housed a large computer. Students signed up to use it, one at a time. Steve was always happy to help them and always available for their many questions.

Since I joined the CBA Community, I saw him as a very pleasant Brother, retired from teaching and devoted to reading. I frequently took him to the library where he would stock up on books which he read rather rapidly. He continued to stay in contact with CBA, attending school liturgies as well as many of the school’s varied celebrations. During his years here at CBA, he developed a deep interest in his various contacts with faculty members and students. He attended many parent meetings after which he always remarked how much the parents loved meeting with the Brothers.

Any time he visited the doctor’s office, he was very animated. He knew the receptionists and nurses’ names, and would always greet them in a warm manner. ‘

Steve was always good at laughing at himself. He loved talking about sports, especially baseball and football. He followed the Yankees and the Giants, constantly keeping up to date on how they were doing.

To sum up the life of this very caring Brother, one would have to say that Brother Steve was a good Brother who lived very simply, and definitely loved being a Brother.

Rest in peace, Steve! Enjoy your eternal reward!

Live Jesus in our hearts! Forever!
