Calvert Hall Hosts First Robotics Tournament

Forty-four teams participated in the first ever Cardinal Classic VRC Tournament at Calvert Hall on Saturday, February 15, 2014. The event was open to middle and high school teams and qualified teams for the Maryland State VEX Robotics Championship.  Eight teams from Calvert Hall’s Robotics Program, which is moderated by Mrs. Renie Brown (Mathematics) and Mr. Chris Taddiken (Mathematics), participated in the state event in Westminster, MD on March 8th.  At the end of the competition, Calvert Hall qualified more teams than any other school or organization in the state of Maryland for the 2014 Vex Robotics World Championship High School Division in Anaheim, CA April 23-26, 2014.  After many exciting matches, teams 5588T and 5588E, which included Casey Borror, Luke Bowen, Malcolm Ferguson, Jack Iler, George Hughey, Dorian Luckie and Tom Tennant, allied to win the Volvo Division.  Team 5588E also won the Judges Award.  In the Northrup Grumman Division, team 5588C (Chris Iler, Danny Kumpf and Nathan Wyand) finished as a tournament semifinalist.  The team of Will Anstett, Ben Bissett and Calum Briggs has also qualified for the World Championship for having the highest non-qualifying team rank in the state of Maryland on the World Programming Skills Rankings.  All four teams will represent Calvert Hall in Anaheim against 400 high school teams from around the globe.
