National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. As Catholic Lasallian schools we to celebrate our Catholic roots and reflect on the innovative, transformative education we provide to our students. The Regional Office has coordinated with District Offices to provide Catholic Schools Week resources to use in our ministries.

Reflection and News from Br. Thomas Casey, FSC, Executive Director of The De La Salle School – Freeport, NY:
Last week was Catholic Schools Week. I am an alumnus of a Catholic elementary school, a Catholic high school, and a Catholic college. I am a vowed member of an international Institute formally known as the Brothers of the Christian Schools. My professional career has provided me with experiences as a teacher or administrator in four different Catholic schools over the span of 42 years. So, when I heard the National Catholic Educational Association’s slogan “Catholic Schools-Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service” I nodded knowingly. Yesterday, when someone showed me William McGurn’s essay in the 31 January 2014 New York Post I smiled serenely. His piece is titled Catholic Schools’ Secret: Love. Just last week I witnessed the love flowing among the members of the trinity that is the basis of the vitality of The De La Salle School. I am referring not only to the interaction among the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit but also to the communication among the student, his family at home, and his teachers at school. Each component has a role to play in the student’s academic success. For this reason when it is time to distribute report cards, as it was on 30 and 31 January, we expect that a student come with one of the adults with whom he lives to receive the document from a teacher. As a true indication of the value the parents of our students place on education we welcomed 61 of our 64 students at the recent parent/teacher conferences. Two of the absent three called to make alternative arrangements and we followed up with the one who did not initiate contact with us. This fruitful collaboration between home and school helps our students strive for success.
As a sign of that success we are happy to announce that members of our eighth grade class recently received acceptance letters from the following Catholic high schools: Regis, Holy Trinity, St. Mary’s, Chaminade, and Kellenberg. (Present indications are that 10 of the 14 students in the class will enroll at Kellenberg.) Congratulations to all the members of our Class of 2014!
