Christian Brothers Academy and Hudson Catholic were both faced with pressure situations as the NJSIAA Non-Public Relays were nearing its conclusion on Saturday at the Bennett Center in Toms River. Both responded with clutch performances to repeat as state champions.

Hudson Catholic was trailing Bishop Eustace by six points heading into the meet-concluding 4×400-meter relay in the Non-Public B competition. But Courtney Johnson, Royaal Jones, Sef Penson, and Terrell Bush wiped out that deficit by winning the 4×400 in 3:35.90. That have Hudson Catholic a 52-49 win over runner-up Bishop Eustace for its second straight title and second overall.

In the Non-Public A meet, CBA was locked in a tight duel with rival Union Catholic, leading 64-60 with two events to go. But Drake Anzano threw down a 1:59.8 anchor (55.1 last 400) to bring CBA across first in the sprint medley relay, and CBA followed that up by winning the 4×400 (3:27.95) to lock up an 84-74 victory over Union Catholic.

The victory extends CBA’s state record to 25 state indoor relay titles.
