The State Champion CBA/JD Hockey team received the Syracuse Sports Corporation’s “Believe to Achieve Award” at a ceremony at The SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College on Tuesday.
The award, accepted on behalf of the team by head coach Mike McKie, recognizes meritorious contributions to the Central New York Sports Community and is given out three times each year. The team was named the top male team for the winter 2012-13 season.
This year’s award has an added special meaning as it was named after Joe LaGuardia. Joe passed away last year and was a graduate of CBA ’66 (his sons Joe Jr. ’92 and Steve ’96 are also alums) and a supporter of local hockey. He was also a longtime member of the Syracuse Sports Corporation board. Joe’s wife, Carol and daughter Lori, were present at the ceremony.
“This initiative is an example of the depth of our sports community,” said Jeff Mickle, sports development director for the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The presentation of these awards marks the hard work and commitment of individuals and teams whose contributions to Central New York are immeasurable.”
The combined CBA/JD hockey team won its first state championship back in March.
