District of Eastern North America
Christmas Card Contest Winner – 2011
During this wonderful time of year, we asked Art students from across the District to capture the spirit of the Christmas Season in their own creative way.
This year’s Christmas Card winner chose to draw the Holy Family because he felt it showed the true meaning of Christmas. The Calvert Hall Senior is a multiple award winner capturing the Hall’s art merit award the past two years and one of his sculptures placed 2nd at the independent high school art show in Bethesda, MD.
“Calvert Hall’s art program requires a passion for art,” says Bernier. “It requires a lot of time, but if you like drawing as much as I do, it will make you a better artist and it will give you a unique and enjoyable high school experience.”
Bernier attributes his art abilities to his teacher, Mr. Victor Janishefski.
“One of the biggest things Mr. J talks about is focus. He always tells us that in order to succeed in anything, not just art, that we need to be serious and focus. This has greatly improved my attention to detail while drawing and also in my other subjects such as math and science.”
Bernier hopes to enroll in an architecture program in college, but also carry his love of art through college by taking many art classes. On the list of colleges Bernier is considering are Maryland Institute College of Art, University of Maryland, Towson University, Catholic University, St. Joseph’s University, Washington College and Fairfield University.
