May he rest in peace!
Thanks Gabe for all you have done and been for the Christian Brothers and for the Church. You always gave me hope in the future.
Gabe was always good to me and with me. For some reason we always laughed together, more than spent time in deep conversation. I lived with him one summer in 1969 on Broadway and 74th St in Manhattan, while I was working on a dissertation at Union Theological Seminary. I guess that is where we connected. He always visited us brothers in Manchester, when he visited his family. I appreciated his visits to Narragansett in these later years and his visits to De La Salle Hall. When Gabe was President of LINE,
he gave the eulogy for a brother who had taught him in Manchester. He was superb, weaving in to a very personal presentation ideas and quotes from Vatican II and some Theologians. I wanted to capture the talk for others to read and, after the funeral, went to the podium to secure the speech left there by Gabe. There was an index card with 5 or 6 words on it. I then realized Gabe’s gift!

Upon arriving at De La Salle College in Washington, Gabe Moran was the first religion teacher who really allowed me to understand how I could relate to the teachings on religion which had heretofore been a complexity of rules about abstract situations. He taught me, and other young monks that it was ok to explore outside the lines instead of being sheltered inside them. I’ll be forever grateful for his insights.
Gabriel was a genius, a scholar, a Brother, and a friend. He wrote more than thirty books, and a long personal note to me when my father died. I always enjoyed reading his books, but I cherished his note
.
God will give him and his pen some rest.
Thank you Gabriel for your great contributions to Lasallianism and Catholicism.
