by Mr. Donald Holden – Director of Development, The De La Salle School, Freeport NY
Kelvin Lopez came to The De La Salle School as a 5th grader in the fall of 2016. His parents were so happy with what his brother Danny, a member of the Class of 2017, was experiencing at The De La Salle School, that they entrusted Kelvin to our care as well. Kelvin had received his early education in the Freeport Public School System. Due to his academic struggles, that system suggested he needed special “individualized services” that De La Salle could not supply. However, our team realized that very often the need is interpreted as academic when in reality it is environmental, and Kelvin became part of our school family.
Through Kelvin’s hard work, the dedication of the faculty and staff at The De La Salle School, and the financial support of the St. John Baptist de La Salle Fund, Kelvin progressed academically, spiritually, socially, and physically. He achieved honor roll status all four years. By his 8th grade year, Kelvin achieved Principal’s List in each quarter (95 average or above with no grade below 90, with top grades in effort and behavior). Today, Kelvin, a freshman on a substantial academic scholarship at Chaminade Catholic High School, has achieved an 89 average in his first trimester. When asked about his experience at The De La Salle School, Kelvin said, “The De La Salle School brought me closer to God and inspired me to achieve my dreams.” We look forward to hearing more great things from this young Lasallian scholar!
THE ST. JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE FUND seeks to ensure that a Lasallian education is available and accessible to those students most in need. Through an initial program of student sponsorship and a growing program of grants to identified schools, the Fund provides tuition assistance for students to attend a Lasallian school. With your support, we are now providing $845,000 annually for our students in need. All are welcome to join the Brothers and their Partners-in-Mission in this specially dedicated scholarship fund which continues to grow each year.
