The original Province of North America was divided in 1864. A photocopied document bearing this date in the Baltimore District Archives states that Bro. Ambrose was to become the Visitor of the new “Province of the United States of America” with the provincial house and novitiate in N.Y. (2nd Street). This appointment was approved by the Superior General and by Brother Facile (Asst. Sup. Gen. overseeing this sector of the world). The Canadian Province continued to be centered in Montreal.
