The Washington Monument in the Nation’s Capital was officially dedicated on the day before Washington’s Birthday. When the Archivist taught at St. John’s (Washington) in the 1980s, various Brothers would mention the anecdote that leftover marble from the monument’s construction had been used in the building of St. John’s Institute (later known as St. John’s College) on Vermont Avenue in the late 1870s.
