3/22/13 – Providence, RI – On Friday evening, seventy-five students from La Salle Academy and St. Raphael Academy braved the cold temperatures and participated in the annual “Homeless Sleep-out.”  Over two hundred students from Rhode Island’s Catholic high schools turned out for this evening of solidarity and awareness.  Students from La Salle Academy, St. Raphael Academy, Mount St. Charles Academy, Bishop Hendricken HS, St. Mary Academy Bayview, and Prout HS met at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul in downtown Providence at 7 PM.  The evening began with prayer, led by La Salle Academy seniors Lauren Kowalski and Isabella Mosca.

The students heard a panel of speakers from the RI Coalition for the Homeless, men and women who had been homeless and shared their personal stories.  Students assembled care packets for the state’s shelters

and then went upstairs for liturgy concelebrated by the schools’ priest chaplains.  At 11 PM, students brought their sleeping bags and blankets outside and tried to get warm and sleep for the evening.  Students gathered pledges for the evening donated to Bishop Tobin’s “Keep the Heat On” fund, which serves needy families with fuel assistance in the winter.
