Former Calvert Hall mathematics teacher/department chair, and varsity soccer coach, Bill Karpovich, was honored during halftime of the school’s varsity soccer game versus Mount Saint Joseph on Friday, September 27, 2013.  A pregame reception was held in the Paul Angelo Russo Dining Hall from 5:30pm – 6:30pm.  Calvert Hall’s current head coach, Rich Zinkand, and St. Joe’s coach, Mike St. Martin, both graduated from Calvert Hall in 1987 and played for Coach Karpovich at The Hall.
Karpovich’s stats include:
  • 1957 graduate of Patterson High School where he starred in baseball and soccer
  • Earned a BES from The Johns Hopkins University – played varsity soccer (1959-60); varsity baseball (1958-59)
  • Mathematics teacher at Calvert Hall from 1967-2001; Department Chair from 1968-1987 (proud that he never missed a day of school or of practice)
  • Head Soccer Coach – 1967-1997
  • 19 Championships (MSA & MIAA) in 31 season of coaching
  • Career record of 422-85-33 – (was ranked third nationally for wins by active coaches at the beginning of the 1997 season)
  • More than 40 of his players played professional soccer
  • Six players received All-Metro Player of the Year honors from The Baltimore Sun – Brian Kirby (1978), Tim Wittman (1980), Chris Reif (1983), Bill Karpovich Jr. (1986), Rob Elliott (1988) and J. J. Kremer (1991).
