Providence, RI – On Saturday, October 13, 2018, La Salle Academy honored Donald J. Kavanagh, A.F.S.C., Principal, on the occasion of his being named an Affiliated Member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the highest honor a lay person can receive from the Institute. The honor is given to those who, in an exemplary manner, manifest Lasallian values of faith, service, and community, who have made the Lasallian spirituality their own, and who have helped the Institute in its mission. Brothers Thomas Casey, F.S.C. and Richard Galvin, F.S.C., Auxiliary Visitors of the District of Eastern North America, represented the Institute in the presentation of the Letters of Affiliation.
Don has served in Lasallian schools for thirty-seven years, as a teacher, coach, and administrator. From 1973-1984 (immediately following college) he was a teacher and coach at La Salle Academy; from 1984-1993 Don served as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal for Student Life at Saint Raphael Academy; in 1999 he was a Senior Dean and Assistant Principal for Student Life at La Salle Academy; and, since 2000, Don has served as Principal of La Salle Academy.
In his own words, Don has observed: “The basis of my leadership action or decisions in which I am involved is how that decision is going to improve ‘touching the minds and the hearts of the students entrusted to our care’.” Thus, it is not simply amount of time but the quality of the time that has marked his commitment to the Lasallian Mission.
