Toronto, ON – Three of our schools gathered at De La Salle College “Oaklands” for the first Lasallian Hockey Tournament, December 13 through 14.
Central Catholic High School’s Vikings (Pittsburgh) and St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute’s Marauders (Buffalo) took the trip North to visit DEL Athletics, taking to the ice in a Round Robin Tournament. Oaklands fielded two teams, Senior and Junior, for a total of four teams, and four games on Friday afternoon. The students athletes were fast, the puck even faster, with an occasional body up against the boards, as each team fought for the La Salle Cup, and some bragging rights too.
After Friday’s games, the student athletes, coaches, and family members who made the trip, gathered for dinner, and an official welcome from Oaklands’ Athletic Director, Mr. Steve Mason, and President, Br. Domenic Viggiani, FSC. In his remarks, Br. Domenic reflected on his experience as a hockey player, that teammates always had each others’ backs. Brother found this fitting for our student athletes, not only as hockey players, but also as Lasallians, that each of them is called to be there for one another, and their Lasallian brothers and sisters.
A highlight video of the day’s play and opportunity for the athletes to associate followed blessing and dinner, before the teams retired for the evening. Saturday morning was set aside for the groups to visit the Hockey Hall of Fame, before returning for the final games of the afternoon. The La Salle Cup wouldn’t have to go far, as De La Salle Oaklands took the cup in a thrilling final over Central Catholic.
