The final seconds were ticking off the clock and the sun was setting on La Salle’s last chance to pull out a win.
Cradling the ball behind Barrington’s goal at Stevenson Field on Sunday evening, Joe Manown let the clock wind down a bit more before passing it out to teammate Evan McGreen.
McGreen then passed it out to Manown’s younger brother Matt at the top of the circle. The sophomore midfielder didn’t hang onto the ball for long, though, sending it right back to McGreen, who then dished it off to the elder Manown, now positioned just to the right of the net.
And it was there, with 17.7 seconds left on the clock that La Salle’s junior attack fired a shot low into the left-hand corner of the cage, lifting the Rams to a hard-fought 9-8 victory over Barrington and its third straight state title in the Division I final of the R.I. Interscholastic League University Orthopedics Boys Lacrosse Championships, Sunday at Brown’s Stevenson Field.
