7/17 – 7/22/11 – Philadelphia, PA – La Salle University hosted the annual Lasallian Youth Assembly of the District of Eastern North America gathering 150 educators and students to campus from July 17 to July 22. The theme for this year’s gathering was, “Liberty and Justice for All.”
Students and teachers came from 15 Lasallian secondary schools, one parish in Queens, NY that has a Lasallian youth group, and one secondary school outside the district where the Brothers were once present. The teachers and students visited many sites throughout Philadelphia for lectures and presentations, including:
-
Old St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
-
The National Liberty Museum to see an exhibit on “Civic Engagement”
-
A talk by Amelia Kegan, of the Bread for the World organization at the Philadelphia Friends Center
-
A presentation on Quakers and Roman Catholics in Philadelphia: A Brief History (also at the Friends Center).
For two days, the students and teachers volunteered at various service and charitable organizations throughout the city.
“We’re seeking to emphasize the role of civic engagement, for broader notions of discipleship and citizenship,” said Br. Ernest J. Miller, F.S.C., Associate Director for Mission and Ministry for the District of Eastern North America.
