4/21/2011 – Freeport, NY – Nine students from Saint Raphael Academy (SRA) spent their April school vacation on a service trip to The De La Salle School in Freeport. Orchestrated by the St. Raphael’s campus ministry staff with Freeport’s Executive Director, Thomas Casey, FSC, SRA high school students spent three and a half days tutoring, helping at recess, and assisting in the after school program.
The students of The De La Salle School benefitted from additional one-on-one attention, and had the opportunity to ask questions of their slightly older Lasallian peers about high school. Some of the St. Raphael students who participate in their high school’s drama program, enthusiastically assisted the De La Salle students with their preparations for the middle school’s dramatization of the Stations of the Cross. Our Holy Redeemer parishioners were the beneficiaries of all the students’ hard work on the Wednesday of Holy Week.
The Rhode Island – Long Island gathering was also a reunion of sorts, as St. Raphael students Adam Derouin, Haley Dalton, and Hannah Coderre were able to meet Brother Thomas. While he was at St. Raphael teaching math and religion, Brother Thomas taught the fathers of Adam, Haley, and Hannah. Brother Thomas also served as the Vice Principal and Principal in his collective 19 years at St. Raphael’s.
Bringing the Rhode Island and Long Island Lasallian schools together was facilitated by yet another Lasallian ministry, Martin de Porres School. MDP generously provided housing at their retreat center in Elmont and offered the services of a bus and driver.
The SRA students, all members of Lasallian Youth, are Anamaria Arteaga, Ishmael Asante, Hannah Coderre, Haley Dalton, Adam Derouin, Savannah Fitzgerald, Kristen Gauvin, Danielle Karcher, and Carolina Mejia. They were accompanied by Lasallian Youth moderators, Nancy Benoit and Kristen Murphy.
