St. Peter’s was well aware of Bishop Loughlin’s reputation for running a lethal fast break.
But by the time Thursday night’s CHSAA AA Intersectional semifinal against the Brooklyn school was said and done, the Eagles discovered it wasn’t just reputation. It was reality, and as good as advertised.
Loughlin, behind the high-scoring guard tandem of Michael Williams (30 points) and Khadeen Carrington (22 points), shot a sizzling 61 percent from the field and pulled away late in the fourth quarter en route to an 89-77 victory over the Eagles at Fordham University in the Bronx.
St. Peter’s ended a remarkable season with a 27-4 record that included the school’s 30th SIHSL championship, a victory over the state’s then top-ranked team (Cardinal Hayes) and an appearance in the N.Y. Archdiocesan championship game.
Loughlin (23-5) advanced to the AA Intersectional final to meet Brooklyn-Queens rival Christ the King at Fordham on Sunday at 3 p.m.
St. Peter’s, which received a team-high 25 points from junior Reilly Walsh, shot 47.4 percent from the field (27 for 57) and only turned the ball over six times, but allowed an uncharacteristically high 89 points.
Loughlin, which shot 36 for 59 from the field, scored a whopping 58 points from inside the paint, a ramification of owning a 37-20 advantage on the backboards.
