UPDATE 1.31.12
First & Foremost, Thank you so much for your generosity!
These are some of the students at St. Peter’s Boys High School in Staten Island who were the direct beneficiaries of your generosity. Without your financial support, some of them may not have been able to continue at their Lasallian School.
Though Superstorm Sandy created new challenges and hardships, we Lasallians came together to help children and families in need.
Our Brothers and school administrators identified children and families suffering from the affects of Superstorm Sandy. However, it was only through your generosity that we were able to respond in such a meaningful way.
To date, over $40,000 of your donations has helped students and families at:
- The De La Salle School – Freeport, NY
- Saint Peter’s Boys High School – Staten Island, NY (pictured above)
- Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School – Brooklyn, NY
Your gifts have helped families in many ways, such as:
- Tuition Assistance
- School Uniforms
- Student School Supplies
Many students, parents, Brothers and school staff at local schools are very appreciative of your generosity.
“My family is so thankful for the generosity the Lasallian Family! Between finding a place to stay, getting work done on the house so we could move back in receiving this wonderful gift helped to relieve the stress of how to pay for school over the next few months. This simple act of kindness enabled me to have a normal day – at least in school!” -St. Peter’s Boys HS Student, Junior Class
“After the storm was over and we tried to get back on track it was so wonderful to have my mood boosted by both the St Peter’s and LaSallian family through all the help that my family and I received.” –St. Peter’s Boys HS Student, Junior Class
“The home of one our students was underwater and deemed unlivable by the city. For a family facing such incredible challenges as making sure that they have a roof over their heads, receiving tuition support gives them the peace of mind to know that their child’s education is taken care of.” –Ms. Patricia Calci – Librarian, St Peter’s Boys HS

UPDATE 11.12.12
Impacted Families Updates
The Leadership Team of the District of Eastern North America (DENA) has been in touch with those ministries whose areas were most generally impacted by Sandy and the winter storm that followed. Hundreds of thousands of customers are still without power in the impact zone, some eleven days later. Some areas are still closed off, not allowing people free access to their homes. So heavily are those areas damaged.
Ministries with Losses
Having taken a survey and have learned that the following ministries have well over three dozen families who have lost homes and everything in them. Numerous impacted families are from each of the following school communities:
- Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School
- Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft NJ
- Martin de Porres Schools
- Saint Peter’s High School for Boys, Staten Island
We have reports of lesser degrees, but nevertheless, impacts are being felt in the Saint Raymond’s High School for Boys, The De La School in Freeport, and Manhattan College school communities.
We will pass on to you additional information from other ministries as we receive it.
One of our ministries, Martin de Porres School, located on the shore in Rockaway, NY, was flooded out. Its parking lot remains covered with three feet of sand and sizable sections of the boardwalk that, in the past, separated it from the ocean.
Ministries should continue to share updated information regarding the status of families in their school communities as well as their education support needs with Alan Weyland and Maryanne Donohue-Lynch.

11/5/12 — One of the defining gifts of the Lasallian charism is the support and care that happens between the individuals who make up our Lasallian Educational Communities. There are individuals within that community in the District of Eastern North America, who have been significantly impacted by Sandy, the super storm that has ravaged parts of the east coast.
In order to make sure families/students are able to remain a part of the Lasallian community and not be worried about educational costs while they struggle to recover, we welcome schools and ministries, alumni, Brothers and friends of our Lasallian mission to donate to the LASALLIAN SOLIDARITY FUND for Educational Support.
The amount of support we will be able to offer students/families will be based on the amount of funds raised or donated.
Our hope is to alleviate some of the stresses related to the costs of Lasallian education for families so they can be more focused on recovering from the storm. The more funds we receive the more help we will be able to offer.
The District of Eastern North America leadership team is working with local heads of ministries to determine the level of need and number of families/students that have been impacted by the storm. Your support will be allocated across the District based on the severity of need as identified by these Lasallian Educational leaders.
We will continue to update and post information regarding this program, the level of need identified and the activities/funds raised on this webpage.
Lasallian Institutions and other organizations that wish to raise funds are asked to inform Brother James Martino at the District office by emailing martino@fscdena.org about plans, then forward funds to FSC DENA at the address below when activities are complete.
