West Warwick / Narragansett, RI – Tides Family Services and Ocean Tides, two of our Lasallian Youth and Family Services ministries, located in Rhode Island, collaborated throughout the week of January 8-12, 2018, with the Sociology/Criminal Justice Program of the University of Rhode Island to offer a for-credit Immersion Experience in Child Welfare course.

On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday URI students spent time at Ocean Tides and Tides Family Services, learning about the nature of the work at each ministry, and the characteristics and services offered to their clients. On Wednesday, the entire class came together for a series of presentations and experiences that started with time in the Family Court and diversion/juvenile services, followed by presentations from various practitioners including: representatives from DCYF on Juvenile Justice, counselors from Ocean Tides and Tides Family Services detailing their work and careers; presentations on the two programs’ varied approaches to education, and a conversation with a URI Sociology/Criminal Justice graduate who is a member of the Senior Staff in Ocean Tides’ residential program.
The program is designed to provide URI students with a wider understanding of careers and activities/services in juvenile justice, see and interact with that work, and have exposure to options outside of police and FBI work.
