United State – On January 18th, the Lasallian College and Universities in Association for Justice (LCUAJ) hosted a Lasallian Teach-In for Justice, the final meeting in a three-part series that began in October 2020. Students, staff, faculty, and administrative representatives from Christian Brothers University, La Salle University, Lewis University, Manhattan College, Saint Mary’s College of California, together with administrators from DENA, the Brother David Darst Center, and Lasallian Volunteers Program. The group experienced prayer, discernment, education, and plans for action.
Inspired by the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Teach-In engaged participants in the critical work of anti-racism. The participants considered these questions: what does it mean to be anti-racist in our lives, in our Lasallian institutions, in our broader communities? How can we move from frameworks of “non-racist” to transformative relationships that work continuously towards becoming “anti-racist”? Through this virtual Teach-In, the hope is to continue to foster relationships of transformation within our Lasallian network. Together, we want to build bridges in the long work of anti-racism and explore, together and by association, the prophetic mission of Lasallian education.
As a follow-up to the Teach-In, the students will meet with their respective campus delegation to strategize as to how to implement the outcomes from the Teach-In within their campus community. Additionally, the work of anti-racism will continue in collaboration with the Lasallian Volunteer program and the District of Eastern North America.
