Happy Birthday, DENA!

It all started during Holy Week in 2006 when over 300 Brothers from our historic Districts gathered in Fernwood, PA. This was a discernment retreat where we prayed to the Holy Spirit for guidance concerning our future as Brothers of the Christian Schools. It was during that event that a decision was made to create a “new entity.”

First we decided on a name for this new entity: the District of Eastern North America, commonly referred to as DENA (Yes, that’s what DENA stands for!). Then a three-year planning process led to the election of Brother Dennis Malloy, FSC, as Visitor, the election of a District Council for DENA, and the Constitutive Assembly that took place in September 2009. The Assembly was the first official gathering of DENA which dealt with structures and plans for the new District. On September 9th (09/09/09) at 9:00 a.m. Brother Alvaro, Superior General, and his Council formally approved the establishment of the District of Eastern North America; DENA was “officially” born!!!

But that was only the beginning. Plans immediately went into action for the first District Chapter Part I, which took place in April, 2011, followed by the first all-District retreat where over 250 Brothers gathered at La Salle University in september, 2011. We were joined on this retreat by some of our Lasallian Partners who provided two panel discussions for dialogue with the Brothers.

September 9, 2011, marked the second birthday for DENA. Now that year three is in full swing, we look forward to the District Mission Assembly in November where Brothers and Partners will gather to formulate plans focusing on our ministries. Brother Alvaro, Superior General, will be present for that gathering. March, 2012, will see District Chapter Part II, where the proceedings of the Mission Assembly will be ratified and sent to the Generalate in Rome for final approval.

And the beat goes on … and on … and on … and on …

Manager of Retirement Services

As Brother John Patzwall celebrates his Golden Jubilee in our Institute, he stands as a paragon of professionalism at the intersection of faith and finance. John may just possibly be the only Brother to have served us simultaneously on the finance committees of a Delegation, a District, a Region, and the Institute itself! Known far beyond our Institute, he is highly respected and admired for his service to many religious institutes and their treasurers.

Brother Thomas Zoppo, acknowledged as among the very best of DENA’s high school administrators, is guided by a real concern for each of the 1200 young men attending Calvert Hall College.  He came to ‘The Hall’ three years ago from a highly successful principalship at Christian Brothers Academy, Syracuse, NY.  This followed five years as Academic Advisor and Recruiter for the School of Engineering at Manhattan College where he was rightly credited with increased recruitment and improved retention.
