Ash Wednesday Nor’Easter
Does anyone remember the famous Ash Wednesday nor’easter of 1962 along the Atlantic coast? the older shore-lovers of Ocean City, NJ (and our Ocean Rest) certainly do. After one of the most destructive storms in New Jersey history (March 6-8, 1962), a foot of sand blanketed Ocean Rest’s lawn, while another two feet covered the parking lot. Not a single dune could be found on the beach at Ocean Rest. On the ocean front, the sand was nearly level with the porch. the pre-existing dunes (although destroyed) and the cement walk-porch between the North and South buildings accounted for the slight damage to Ocean Rest. The damage south of 34th Street, however, was very severe.

Brother Ethelbert Anthony (Wallace) was elected president of the secondary school Department of the NCEA at their convention in Detroit.

Archbishop Shehan Blesses Our Lady of Lourdes
Archbishop (later Cardinal) Shehan of Baltimore traveled to Calvert Hall College HS (Towson, MD) to bless the new Brothers’ Residence and the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in impressive ceremonies.

17 West Boys Ordained Priests
Seventeen graduates (among them, nine for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia) of West Catholic HS (Phila.) were ordained as priests this spring.

Barrytown Retreat House Promising
Barrytown (NY) is emerging as more a likely location than Lincroft (NJ) for a New York District retreat house for the Brothers and possibly students, because of its centrality to so many schools and communities. But some are citing a portion of the Lincoln Hall property as a possibility.

Brother Raymond of Mary Awarded Woodrow Wilson Scholarship
Brother Raymond of Mary (LINE), a student Brother at De La Salle College (Washington), has been awarded a Woodrow Wilson scholarship for 1962-1963; he will study for his M.A. in English at the U. of California (Berkeley).

JFK Fitness Inspires Cemetery Run
Some Brothers at Queen of Peace HS (North Arlington, NJ), complying with President Kennedy’s physical fitness program, have taken to daily exercise routines, including a vigorous run through the neighboring cemetery.

Students Discusses Vocation
Over Hockey
Brother Celsus John (pictured) interviewed the boys in his class at St. Joseph’s HS (Detroit) whom he considered good vocational recruits for the Brothers. After telling these students that they were acceptable, Brother John suggested that if any of them wished to discuss vocations further, he was available for an evening appointment. One boy showed up with two hockey tickets to a Detroit Red Wings hockey game and told him that he wanted to discuss the vocation question at the Red Wings game with him!

Gate Heaven Plots Improved
Improvements are underway at the Brothers’ plot at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne (NY). Two wings, bearing the names of the Brothers whose remains were transferred from Clason Point and Pocantico Hills will be added to the present monument, and granite markers will be placed on each grave opened since 1929. A special marker will indicate the grave of Brother Facile, the former Assistant Superior General, who made so many contributions to the pioneer work of the Brothers in the US.

Hoops a Family Affair at Brother’s Open House
The Brothers at Cardinal Spellman HS conducted an informal open house of the school and the Brothers’ residence for the members of their own families. The favorite place on the property was the school gymnasium, as indicated by the New York Newsletter:
The mother-in-law of the brother of Brother Charles Thomas “couldn’t resist the impulse to try her hook shot when she found herself in mid-court, while chasing the younger generation…and the little nieces, in their crinoline [full stiff skirt or underskirt] and pinafores, competed well against their brothers in climbing the ropes and swinging on them, to the horror of their mothers…many a gent who knows better tried his hand at a few lay-ups, to his Monday’s regrets.”

Letters of Affiliation (honorary membership) will be granted after Easter to Dr. Francis C. Eksterowicz, uncle of Brother Fidelian Gregory, in recognition of his many benefactions to the Ammendale and Elkins Park communities.
