La Salle Centennial Begins
La Salle College began its Centennial (1863-1963) celebration in Fall 1963. The international publication known as the Institute Bulletin gave five pages of coverage to this event. Baltimore Numbers
The largest Baltimore District schools in September 1963 were La Salle College, 5,302 (Day & Eve.); West Catholic (Phila.), 1,950; Central Catholic (Pgh.), 1,620; Calvert Hall (Towson), 1,268; South Hills (Pgh.), 1,216; and St. John’s (D.C.), 1,123. A grand total of 520 Brothers are in the District, with 16,322 students enrolled.

Local Parish Borrows St. John’s Uxbridge
The local parish in Uxbridge, Ontario Canada, began using the facilities of St. John’s Industrial School early in September to allow their old church to be razed in preparation for the construction of a larger church. They hope to be in their own church in early 1964.

Providence Bishop: HS for Boys
The Bishop of Providence envisions a new high school for 1,000 boys to open in 1969 for the East Providence area, and to be given to the Brothers of the LI-NE District without any mortgage.

DLS Oaklands Numbers Up
De La Salle College, Oaklands, Toronto Canada, resumed classes in September 1938 with 388 students, an increase of 36 from a year earlier. New features include a uniform rental fee of $5 (Canadian) and also a hired chef to take charge of the food services.

Manhattan Acquires West Hill

Loughlin Vocations
Bishop Loughlin HS in Brooklyn, NY, is a powerhouse for vocations. In the long history of Bishop Loughlin and its Jay Street predecessor (St. James)—as of autumn 1963—117 diocesan priests, 54 diocesan seminarians, 97 religious order priests, 78 religious order aspirants, 110 Christian Brothers, and 18 Brothers of other congregations have been educated there.

DLS College Walk for JFK
Two days after the assassination of President Kennedy, over 100 of the student Brothers (plus a few faculty members) of De La Salle College in Washington, D.C. were each given 50 cents and a sandwich and joined other Catholic University students by walking from the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to the U.S. Capitol where they witnessed the afternoon ceremonies honoring Kennedy. Some even managed to enter the Capitol rotunda to pay respects at the casket after waiting about nine hours to do so.

Central Grad Charged with JFK Funeral
Capt. Thomas Reid (Class of 1954 at Central Catholic HS in Pittsburgh, PA) was in charge of the military arrangements at the funeral of President Kennedy.

Senator Speaks, Students Receive New Instruments
In November, the esteemed Senator Frank O’Connor attended the annual dance held by the cadet band of De La Salle, Oaklands, Toronto Canada. Sen. O’Connor spoke to all in attendance and promised to equip the band with new instruments at the cost of $2,650 (Canadian).

Mourning JFK at Lasallian Schools
Each Lasallian school endured a painful mourning during the days after the Kennedy assassination, but perhaps most deeply so at La Salle Academy in Newport, RI. Many students there had come into direct contact with the family when the president would visit the town. One of the boys at LSA, for example, spent the summer caring for “Macaroni,” the pony of young Caroline Kennedy.

Manhattan Goes Nuclear
Manhattan College will put into use in September the first critical, or “hot,” nuclear reactor in New York City. The training reactor, donated by the American Machine and Foundry Co., cost $120,000.

LI-NE District stats for 1963: The 228 Brothers in communities and 78 student Brothers total 306 professed Brothers. Unofficially, there were 173 community Brothers when the LI-NE District began operations in 1957.

Baltimore Buys in Frederick, MD
The Baltimore District has purchased 300 acres south of Frederick, MD, for a retreat house to accommodate 40 persons. This image of the completed Christian Brothers Retreat House is an artwork based upon an aerial photograph which was published as a postcard; the Archives has no information regarding the artist, the photographer, or the publisher.

New Ministry: Trinity High School
A new Lasallian ministry which opened in September 1963 is Trinity HS (Shiremanstown, PA, near Harrisburg), a co-institutional school. Its auditorium was completed in October and the gym is in its final stages. This image appeared on the front cover of the dedication booklet of Jan. 26, 1964; the architectural firm was Good, Long, and Associates of Harrisburg.
