Manhattan’s 95th Alumni Banquet
Manhattan College’s 95th annual banquet of the Alumni Society was held on February 1, 1964. With 12,000 alums strong, this society has been described as the oldest Catholic college alumni organization in the US, tracing its formation to 1869.

Lincoln Hall 100
The special Mass for the 100th anniversary (1863-1963) of Lincoln Hall (NY) will be celebrated on January 11 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral by Cardinal Spellman, with the sermon by Archbishop (later Cardinal) O’Boyle of Washington. Baltimore District Begins Accepting “Working Brothers”
The Baltimore District Council decided that the district should begin to accept candidates who would be “working Brothers” (young men would enter the Brothers’ community life but who would specialize in technical and specialized work and not classroom instruction as such).

New LI-NE School in New Haven
The Brothers of the LINE District will begin a new ministry at St. Bernard’s HS in New Haven (CT) in September 1964, but the boys will eventually shift from this school to a brand-new structure several years later in Uncasville (between New Haven and Norwich).

New Engineering Building at Manhattan
The new engineering building at Manhattan College was being readied for occupancy over the Christmas break. Both the old nuclear reactor (first in NYC) and the new one will be located in the engineering building.

St. Raphael Grads All Run for Office
What are the chances? Four graduates of St. Raphael’s (Pawtucket, RI), each one from the Class of 1952 and each one from the homeroom of Br. Cosmas Francis (1951-52), all ran for the same office — against each other! Emerging victorious was Paul Fournier.

Recent guests to La Salle College include Count Basie and his full orchestra presenting a performance, and also Sargent Shriver, director of the Peace Corps, giving an address.

Good Shepherd Wing to Open
The dedication of the new wing to Good Shepherd Parish School (NYC) is set for December 8. New York Newsletter, December 1, 1963, p. 19. The long-awaited gym was inaugurated in January 1964.

New Science Building in Miami
The new science building at La Salle HS in Miami is now occupied and is a pleasure to the science teachers who planned it. Both the science building and the new field house will be dedicated on February 4.

Spellman Choir to Sing at NY World Fair
The choir of Cardinal Spellman HS will sing at the New York state building at the New York World’s Fair on April 28.

Central Catholic’s Debate Tournament Wins & Attendance
Central Catholic High’s debate tournament was attended by 50 high schools from 7 states; Central won both first place cups.

St. Joseph Detroit to Close
St. Joseph HS (Detroit) has entered its final semester. It will close in June because of declining enrollment; many of the underclassmen will transfer to De La Salle Collegiate.

Korean War Memorial Medals Awarded
Mr. Halsey McGovern, during a special parade at St. John’s College HS (Washington), presented military medals to three outstanding cadets in memory of his two sons, both St. John’s grads, who had been killed in the Korean War.

Lincoln Hall Dog Story Featured
The West Coast edition of This Week magazine recently ran a two-page feature on the caring-for-dogs aspect of the program at Lincoln Hall. Two spinoffs: several Beverly Hills residents offered their dogs to Lincoln Hall, and there was some buzz about a possible film about this ministry.

All of the 164 boys at St. Gabriel’s Hall (Audubon, PA) have new Hollywood beds, with bookcase headboards.

Brother’s House Declared a Mansion
It was revealed that the Brothers’ house at St. John’s Parish School (Kingsbridge) has been declared a typical mansion of the early 1900s. Originally located on Kingsbridge Ave., it was moved to Godwin Terrace circa 1910.

Ready for a Hootenanny!
“A Hootenanny assembly was held with requests for more” at St. John’s (Washington). The student council and dramatics department of West Catholic staged its first hootenany as well. A hootenanny was held at Lincoln Hall for the cottage residents.

New Baltimore School
The Baltimore District anticipates the opening of a new Lasallian school in Glen Burnie (Baltimore suburb) to open in 1966 with a freshman class, and expand gradually to 1000 students and 25 Brothers.

The New York District has received permission from the institute in Rome to grant benefactor (BFSC) status to Mr. Peter Connell, the brother of Br. Chrysostom Basil.

Pearl Buck Friend Receives La Salle Award
Noted columnist Art Buchwald received the annual Collegian award from the student newspaper at La Salle College. Buchwald’s friend, Pearl Buck (Nobel Prize winner) joined the reception and dinner held by the Collegian.
