A large photo of the corps of cadets of La Salle Military Academy (Oakdale, Long Island) was given prominence on p. 59 of the Messenger of the Divine Child (Easter, 1939).

Oak Leaves Begins

On April 2, the first ever edition of the school newspaper (Oak Leaves) was circulated at De La Salle College (“Oaklands”) in Toronto. Its first page featured a large photo of Senator Frank O’Connor who recently received affiliation (honorary membership) into the institute.

Cadet Inspection by Minister of Defense

On May 14, Hon. Ian Mackenzie, Minister of National Defense of Canada, came from Ottawa expressly for the annual cadet inspection at De la Salle College (“Oaklands”) in Toronto. He highly complimented the cadet corps and spoke well of it upon returning to the national capital.

Archbishop Spellman Announced

In 1939, Auxiliary Bishop Francis J. Spellman of Boston was elevated as the new Archbishop of New York, replacing Cardinal Patrick Hayes.

ARCHIVIST’S NOTE: Archbishop Spellman was later named a Cardinal in 1946, and served as Archbishop of NY until his death in 1967.

Br. Elzear Alfred (Kelly), former president of La Salle College, recently launched the La Salle College Civic and Social Congress in order to help train laymen in labor and industrial leadership via weekend classes at La Salle.

Msgr. McShea Honored at West

On Easter Monday evening 1939, Msgr. Joseph McShea (Class of 1924) was honored by his alma mater, West Philadelphia Catholic HS.

25 St. John’s Boys Have Flu

On March 2, 1939, 25 of the boys of St. John’s Industrial School (Toronto) were in bed from influenza.

50 Years Scranton

The University of Scranton is celebrating its 50th anniversary (1888-1938) this year, and coincidentally it opened the first department of publishing to be established in any college or university in the US.
