St. John’s (DC) Sings for Kennedy
The regimental band of St. John’s College HS (Washington) played appropriate Christmas songs immediately after President Kennedy’s remarks at the lighting of the national Christmas tree near the White House.

Four Receive Robe
Four young men received the robe on January 25 at Ammendale; only Brother Robert Garry (today known as Brother James Steck) persevered. Among the new aspects of the ceremony were the opening procession of postulants and sponsors, the blessing of the robes during the ceremony, the presence of the sponsor at the receiving of the robe, and the presence of the immediate families of the new novices.

St. Francis Building
A new building at St. Francis Vocational School (Eddington, PA) is envisioned for a gym, theater, and shops.

Brothers Staff New School for the Main Line
The Baltimore District has agreed to help staff the new high school envisioned for the Main Line. This school eventually became Archbishop Carroll HS (Radnor, PA). The District has also accepted the commitment for a new high school in Annandale, VA (near Washington), but has declined an offer to take accept Bethlehem (PA) Catholic HS.

400 Student Sock Hop
The sock-hop at Bishop O’Connell HS (Arlington, VA), which benefitted the missions, featured 400 students lining the gymnasium seats with their shoes and twisting to their favorite records. This photo from the 1963 Shield yearbook shows another dance that same year at O’Connell.

La Salle Institute (Troy, NY) received notification from the US Army that it has earned an “Honor Rating” as a military high school.

New Rooms at DLS College Opened
The new refectories (dining rooms) and the senior common room at De La Salle College (Washington) were eagerly opened on November 21, and a sumptuous meal (feast of the Presentation of Mary) was served for the household in celebration.

Buffalo Community Moves
The Brothers’ community at St. Joseph’s (Buffalo) has moved to its new residence adjacent to the school. The first Mass in the new chapel there was on February 19, the feast (at the time) of Blessed (now St.) Benilde.

La Salle Troy Launches Big Campaign
In mid-February, La Salle Institute (Troy, NY) launched its million-dollar drive to build a new school, gym, auditorium, and Brothers’ residence on land purchased by the school in North Greenbush.

February 15 brought a “first” at Bishop Bradley HS (Manchester, NH): a dialogue Mass was celebrated in the Byzantine Rite, but it was in English.

New Auxiliary Visitor New York
The superior general appointed Brother Anastasius Benedict (Ayers) as auxiliary visitor of New York and supervisor of high schools (effective June 30, 1963). Brother Augustine Philip (Nelan), former president of Manhattan College, will become the new auxiliary visitor of the Philippines.

Midnight Mass at St. John’s (Ont)
Most of the boys at St. John’s Training School (Uxbridge, Ontario) went home for a Christmas visit; 35 remained at the school for Christmas. For the first time in several years, midnight Mass was celebrated in the chapel.

In the presence of 600 persons, Archbishop Pocock of Toronto blessed the new $400,000 addition (classrooms, auditorium, gymnasium) of St. John’s Training School (Uxbridge, ON) on January 13. This photo is part of the student entertainment from the day’s activities.

Rawhide Actor Marries at Ammendale
The cook on “Rawhide” (a series on CBS-TV at the time) married the first Mardi Gras Queen of Washington, DC, in the novitiate chapel at Ammendale on December 30.

Ammendale: Fallout Shelter
In the wake of the nerve-racking Cuban Missile Crisis of fall 1962, the main building of the Baltimore District’s motherhouse at Ammendale (MD) has been designated as a fallout shelter with a capacity of 130.

Calvert Hall Shrine Dedication
Auxiliary Bishop T. Austin Murphy blessed the stately Our Lady of Lourdes shrine at Calvert Hall (Towson, MD) on a frigid December 15, 1963. Among the 500 in attendance was Brother Gabriel Cecilian (Cannon), the former director and prime mover for the new Calvert Hall. This photo from the 1964 Cardinal and Gold yearbook shows the shrine in considerably more benign weather.

The new library at De La Salle College (Washington) opened in early February when the student Brothers moved all of the books and periodicals from the former site to the new.

2,000 at Open House
On February 8, an open house was held at De La Salle (Oaklands) in Toronto; nearly 2,000 parents and friends visited the decorated classrooms of the school. Many of the parents were able to discuss student problems with the teachers.
