Hal Holbrook Visits La Salle
At La Salle College, the students have plenty to talk about. Acclaimed actor Hal Holbrook impersonated Mark Twain before a packed theater, while on another night over 2,400 students jammed the Union Lounge to hear the Smothers Brothers (comedians). Sargent Shriver (Peace Corps Director) received the coveted Signum Fidei Medal for his contributions.

At the Hillside scholasticate in Troy (NY), a historical rarity was recorded on October 19: The student Brothers voted to push FORWARD the rising time from 5:10 a.m. to 5 a.m.!

Sabotage at St. Peter’s HS (Staten Island): three gallons of water were discovered in the gas tank of the community’s 1959 Dodge station wagon. “The brethren were wondering if there was any connection with this incident and the PTA Meeting.”

The Jesuit Fathers have announced that the recipient of their annual Xavier Mission Award will be our Brother Bertin Raymund, scheduled for November 8 in NYC. Brother Ray’s zeal for the mission work in the Philippines and in Africa has been most exemplary.

Gate of Heaven Cemetery
Improvements made to the Brothers’ burial plot at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, which the Brothers acquired in 1929, were completed in October. The main monument has been cleaned and greatly enlarged.

Brothers Begin in Miami
Brothers from the Baltimore District began conducting Immaculata-La Salle HS in Miami in summer 1962. Brother Felician Patrick (Ellis) is the first Principal/Director from the Baltimore District. The community consists of Baltimore Brothers (7), Cuba (2), LI-NE (1), New York (1), St. Louis (1). The school was racially integrated this year, without fanfare.

Scranton Hall Named
One of the residence halls at the University of Scranton will be named “Denis Edward Hall” after the recently-deceased Brother Denis Edward (Yourgens), the former inspector of schools for the Baltimore District and also former president of St. Thomas College (renamed Univ. of Scranton).

Central Catholic 35th Anniversary
Central Catholic HS (Pittsburgh) held its big 35th anniversary dinner (1,000 attended) at the Pittsburgh Hilton. September 11 was proclaimed as “Central Catholic Day” in the city by Mayor Barr, and Brother William (principal) was named as “citizen of the week” by a local radio station.

ABC News Films Sacred Heart Students
The weekly ABC-TV crime series entitled “The Naked City” will film scenes of Highbridge (a section of NYC), with students from Sacred Heart School as “props.”
