Drug-Infested Area, Strange Happenings

St. Thomas Apostle Parish School is in one of Harlem’s drug-infested neighborhoods. One night, Brother Alban Stephen (likely wearing his Robe) answered the impatient ring of the doorbell. At the door was an addict, sporting sunglasses that evening, who said, “Oh….sorry….I didn’t know this was a preacher’s house,” and he bowed his head and blessing himself hurriedly with his left hand, and fled into the night.

Easter Leadership in Bulletin

The Easter 1961 issue of The Lasallian Bulletin (Scarboro, Ont.) featured a 3-page article by noted psychologist Brother Rogatian Philip (who had ties with La Salle College, Philadelphia) on the theme of “Leadership.” At the time, Brother Philip was a on the faculty of Assumption University in Windsor, Ont. Another major article in this magazine dealt with one of the most accomplished botanists in North America, Brother Marie Victorin. Brother Victorin founded the Botanical Gardens of Montreal, and a life-size statue of him has long stood there in tribute to his contributions.

On March 16, George Wardrope (Minister of Reform Institutions for Ontario) visited St. John’s, and he and invited guests were treated to a black-faced minstrel show, directed by Brother Stanislaus, which was put on by 20 of the boys. So successful was the show that they agreed to put on the show again for a charitable cause.
