Spanish Civil War

CoverStory001The April 1938 issue of the Institute Bulletin devoted six pages and three photos to the devastation of various Lasallian schools in Spain during the worst days of its Civil War (1936-1939).

During that period, dozens of Christian Brothers (and hundreds of priests and men/women religious) were executed generally by the leftist republican forces. In this photo, the Lasallian school is identified in the French-language text as “College San-Marcial” in Irun (Spain); its classroom building had taken a direct hit from a bomb dropped by an airplane during the fighting.
