A Salute to History
Here is an intriguing photograph from the French-language Institute Bulletin of July 1937:
You don’t have to be a history scholar to recognize young Lasallian students rendering the fascist salute to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in his military attire. The setting was a Lasallian school in Benghazi, Libya (North Africa), presumably in 1937.
Fascist Italy, like Nazi Germany, was extending its sphere of influence at this time, setting the stage for the beginning of World War II (1939).
Interestingly, it would appear that a Christian Brother to the viewer’s left (and possibly another Brother in the background) rendered the same salute to the man whom Italians acclaimed “Il Duce.”
