5/31/2011 – Springfield Gardens, NY – Each class at the Springfield Gardens campus of Martin de Porres organization has participated in Project Altruism. Sixteen Elementary and Middle School classes participated. Learning the meaning of altruism, each class decided upon a particular project that they agreed to work on together.
One project chosen was to visit an orphanage; another was to visit a residence for the elderly. As part of these projects, some classes created and wrote greeting cards while others created several works of art to bring to other schools. One class even made a large quilt with the names of prominent African American performers, writers, public servants, and historic activists written in each of the squares. One class made individual pillows while other classes raised funds for MDP’s Twinning school in Africa. Another class put together a big basket of items to take to “Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International,” delivered to the Long Island Chapter in Melville, NY.
