Eatontown, NJ – The District of Eastern North America conducted its sixth annual Advent Haiti Appeal. For the 2018-2019 Appeal, in addition to funding special projects at the Saint Jean Baptist de La Salle College in Port-au-Prince, seven schools in the north of Haiti located in Port-de-Paix and the Island of Tortue.
In October 2018, on behalf of Brother Dennis Lee and at the invitation of the Brother Visitor of the South Mexico-Antilles District, Alan Weyland visited the ministries in the north of Haiti and reported back on the needs of the schools.
There are seven Lasallian schools on the island, with a mixture of primary, secondary, and both. Two schools are located along the south coast and the other five in the highlands. Many schools have sessions in the morning and in the afternoon. The total student population in the seven Lasallian schools on the island is 2,686 as of October 2018. Saint Jean Baptist de La Salle College located in Port-au-Prince is currently educating over 650 students.
Some of the designated projects for the Advent Haiti Appeal ranged from funds for scholarships, landscaping for the establishment or enhancement of a playground with sports equipment, classroom supplies, the enhancement of school libraries, and funds for desks and chairs. We are very pleased to announce that due to the funds raised, all projects are fully funded! We are very grateful to all who donated to assist in supporting the educational work of these ministries.
Hands Out for Haiti Campaign- Celebrating the Tercentenary!
Under the leadership of the Boys Hockey Team at La Salle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island, the annual Hands Out for Haiti Campaign surpassed the goal they set for themselves by raising $11, 593.67! The Middle School raised double the goal that they had set! For the week-long campaign the students organized morning prayer, visits to classrooms and opportunities to tell the story of the Lasallian mission in Haiti. All of those student-led activities, including reaching out to the larger school community, created the enthusiastic response that resulted in such a successful campaign.
With Gratitude
It is with gratitude that we also thank La Salle College High School, The De La Salle School, Saint Joseph’s Collegiate Institute and the Anselm Hall Brothers’ community, as well as the many individual donors for their great support for the Advent Haiti Appeal. If it were not for the generosity of these Lasallians, the educational mission in Haiti would not be able to meet the needs of all the young people entrusted to their care. In total the Appeal raised $16,730.46. Thank you to everyone who made this campaign such a success!
