The De La Salle Institute was one of the preeminent New York City educational institutions. Situated in the former Charlier Institute on 59th Street from 1887 until 1924, and facing Central Park, the school commanded a picturesque view far removed from the bustle of the City. The six-story high elegantly-trimmed building, which extended from 59th to 58th Streets, stood in proximity to the bucolic setting and grandeur of the park. Its shimmering lakes, majestic statuary, well-kept walks and wooden knolls appealed to the finer sensibilities of youth and served as a recreation for the students of De La Salle Institute.
