The Pony Express, which began at its eastern terminus of St. Joseph (MO) in April 1860 and stretched westward to Sacramento (CA), announced the end of its existence on this date because the recently-completed transcontinental telegraph was more efficient. The Christian Brothers arrived in St. Joseph around this time (1867) opening a commercial school and later a boarding school there, and later still, Christian Brothers High School.
