OVERVIEW

San Miguel School, an all-boys, independent Lasallian Catholic middle school located in Washington, DC, was founded in 2002 by the Christian Brothers and St. John’s College High School. The school, with a student body of 93 in grades six through eight, equips disadvantaged boys with the necessary academic skills, social development and spiritual formation to become responsible, hard-working and faith-filled citizens. While a majority of the students are Roman Catholic, students of all faiths are welcome. San Miguel has experienced a 100% acceptance rate to the area’s best Catholic and independent, private high schools as well as a 100% high school graduation rate of its students. The mission of San Miguel School is dedicated to the Lasallian Catholic education of its students, including the impoverished and disadvantaged with each student being encouraged to develop his faith, character, intellect, and morality.

POSITION SUMMARY

The President, the school’s visionary leader and principal institutional spokesperson to all of the school’s constituents as well as the broader community, has overall responsibility for the effective management of the school and for promoting the Lasallian Catholic educational mission and its values, with special emphasis on the religious, spiritual, and service orientation of the school. The President’s highest priority is to lead a Development program and financial management practices that achieve long-term, financial sustainability of the San Miguel School where tuition represents less than 5% of revenue. The Principal is a direct report to the President and the President reports to the Board of Trustees. We anticipate a start date of July 1, 2019.

KEY DUTIES

  • Ensure that the school’s Catholic Identity and Lasallian Mission is embraced and advanced.
  • Maintain, nurture, and strengthen the school’s unique, collegial atmosphere for faculty, students and their families.
  • Design and lead a successful and comprehensive Development program to support ongoing operations and build a reserve fund. Enhance annual fund appeals and strengthen planned giving, ensure on-going donor cultivation and relationship management, and solicit major gifts and grants from foundations, trusts, organizations, and individuals.
  • Develop partnerships with NativityMiguel and DC faith-based schools and other advocates of parental choice.
  • Serve as the primary representative of San Miguel in the Washington Metro area and cultivate relationships to expand the awareness and mission of San Miguel.
  • Oversee all school finances including the development of the annual budget, subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees.
  • Modify/adapt the school’s organizational structure, policies and procedures to meet new needs, in consultation with the Board of Trustees.
  • Oversee the school’s marketing, admissions, academic, alumni, and business activities to deliver a productive and safe learning environment for all students, faculty and staff.
  • Act as the school’s liaison with the District of Eastern North America and the Archdiocese of Washington DC.
  • Create and foster a stimulating and professional community environment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven record of achievement in Development/Sales (e.g., Annual Fund, Endowment building, Capital Campaign, Planned Giving, Product or Service sales) and knowledge of finance/budgets
  • Strong Public Relations and communication skills
  • Proven manager with at least 5 years of management and organizational leadership experience
  • A capacity for articulating an apostolic vision that incorporates the best aspects of Catholic education is strongly preferred
  • Some travel required to achieve Development program goals and objectives, as well as attend professional and mission-based programs and conferences

  • Is a strong and inspirational leader partnering with the Trustees, Principal, Faculty, Staff, Parents, and other school constituencies in support of the Lasallian educational philosophy
  • Has the intellect and enthusiasm to cultivate and implement new Development strategies to fund the school
  • Possesses a genuine affection for the human and Christian education of the young, especially the poor and marginalized
  • Has the ability and willingness to relate to students as well as interact with them regularly on campus and at school events
  • Has an accessible and approachable style, with a willingness to listen and encourage the development of new ideas while also offering creative solutions to a variety of challenges
  • Respects the dignity of every person and models behavior that demonstrates appreciation for all individuals

 

EDUCATION: BS/BA required; advanced degree is strongly preferred
