La Salle Academy, Providence, Winter Sports

Despite the frigid temperatures and the feet of snow La Salle Academy, Providence, had a scorching Winter Athletic Season. The school collected 5 team State Championships and 2 National Championships, besides divisional championships and an individual State Championship in wrestling.

The boys’ and girls’ Indoor Track teams captured State Championships and then their 4X1 mile teams won National titles at the New Balance meet in NYC. This is the first time in the history of the meet that the same school has won both the boys’ and the girls’ races.

In basketball the girls’ team was runner-up in the State championships, while the boys won both divisional and State championship honors—the first time a team has won both championships in the same year in Rhode Island.

In hockey the girls’ team won their State championship and the boys’ team broke its 38 year drought (the State championship was last won by La Salle in 1977!!) with an exciting 2-1 game record in the 3 game championship.

The boys’ (Division champions) and girls swim teams, the wrestling team, the gymnastics team (2nd place in the States) and the mixed competition cheerleading team (2nd place in the States) all had terrific seasons.

Onto the Spring!!
