Baltimore District to Assume Control of La Salle HS, Miami

The Baltimore District will assume control of La Salle HS in Miami starting July 1. The native Cuban Brothers had been valiantly conducting the school since summer 1961. The three other American districts which have Brothers there on exchange will continue this arrangement for a year or two. The first director of the school and community from Baltimore will be Brother Felician Patrick (Ellis).

Over two-thirds of the population of the Philadelphia Protectory for Boys (now St. Gabriel’s Hall) went home for Easter vacatiom. It was the first time in history of the Protectory that there were so few residents. Trips to Washington and NYC and field days filled the time for the stay-at-homes.

Brother Clair Stanislaus Receives Honorary Degree at La Salle

Brother Clair Stanislaus (Battersby), the famed historian of the Christian Brothers, received an honorary Degree from La Salle College along with Rev. Mark Heath (OP) at La Salle’s annual Founder Day in May 15, 1962. About 1,000 grads, faculty and guests attended the event at the Four Chefs restaurant.

Forensics at Central Catholic a Hit

Thanks to Brother Gregory Rene (Sterner), forensics has put Central Catholic HS (Pittsburgh) on the map. Central won first place at a McKeesport tournament, qualified four debaters for the CFL finals in Miami, and placed 10 speakers in the CFL Diocesan speech semi-finals (more than any school in Diocese).

St. Joe’s Collegiate Centennial Forthcoming

St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute (Buffalo) is gearing up for its big centennial (1861-1961) celebration to be held on May 15, 1962, with the local Bishop celebrating a Pontifical High Mass at the old cathedral and Bishop Leo Smith (an alum) giving the sermon. Later that night at the Hotel Statler will be a civic celebration in the Golden Ballroom. Meanwhile, a new residence for the Brothers is under construction in the rear of the school building. St. Joseph’s claims 15,000 alumni.

St. Martin de Porres Canonization Celebrated by St. Augustine’s

St. Martin de Porres was canonized (declared a saint) in 1962, and this event found the parishioners of St. Augustine’s parish in NYC at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on May 6 to celebrate the life of St. Martin with the boys of St. Augustine’s School singing the Vespers and Benediction.

Bradley State Science Fair Wins

Three students of Bishop Bradley HS (Manchester, NH) represented the school in the State Science Fair. Two of these did so well that the state prize for the school placing highest in the entire fair went to Bradley.

Mater Christi HS Nears Completion; Dedication May 6

Mater Christi HS, although open, is inching closer to final completion of its physical plant. The school library opened in late winter, and the school’s first-ever dance was an afternoon Valentine’s dance. The formal dedication of the entire facility was on May 6 and featured Bishop McEntegart (Diocese of Brooklyn) and the entire student body. Bishop McEntegart insisted on being introduced to each Brother in the procession—”After all,” he said, “I’m one of them, you know.”

Tears for Tomorrow Filmed Across from De La Salle Academy (RI)

A filming company provided some excitement for De La Salle Academy (Newport, RI) by using the Berwind estate (across the road) for scenes of a forthcoming movie about the Hungarian Revolution (“Tears for Tomorrow”). Some of the DLS boys got bit parts.

The annual fireworks display was held at St. John’s Training School on Monday, May 21. Over 500 cars were parked on the property with well over 2,000 spectators. Once again the group from the Ontario Training School at Port Bolster were guests. the Uxbridge Boy Scouts took up a collection in aid of youth hockey in Uxbridge and some $150 was collected.
