Trinity High School to Receive Brothers
On December 1, the Bishop of Harrisburg and the Baltimore Provincial (Br. Didymus John Quinn) signed a contract for the Brother to teach the boys at a new high school in the western suburbs of Harrisburg; the school would become Trinity HS in Shiremanstown (now Camp Hill), PA.

Philadelphia Protectory (St. Gabe’s) Cubicles Installed
Individual “bedroom” cubicles, with a plush lounge, are the newest innovation in the dormitory of the Third Division (youngest residents) at the Philadelphia Protectory for Boys, later renamed St. Gabriel’s Hall. One-third of the student population enjoyed their visit home at Christmas—and all 100% of them returned to “The Pro.”

Baltimore District Acquires
Miami School
During the 1961-1962 school year, the recently-emigrated Brothers from Cuba valiantly conducted and staffed the new boys’ half of La Salle-Immaculata HS (Miami), but were plagued by high requirements in trying to receive certification from the State of Florida. Brother Didymus John (Quinn), Visitor, requested that the administration of the school be turned over to the Baltimore District, and the Institute approved that transfer, effective July 1962. Brother Felician Patrick (Ellis) would eventually be named as the incoming Principal.

Governor’s Dinner at La Salle
Attending the January 21 Governor’s Dinner, benefitting La Salle College’s approaching centennial and fund-raising efforts, were Governors Lawrence (PA) and Hughes (NJ); Senator Philip Hart (D-Michigan) and West Catholic alum; the Mayor of Philadelphia; and the local District Attorney.

Forensic Tournament at La Salle
La Salle College hosted third annual forensic tournament for Lasallian high schools; Central Catholic (Pittsburgh) finished first, with West Catholic (Phila.) placing second.

Half Holiday for John Glenn
In honor of Col. John Glenn’s successful three orbits around the earth (a first for the US Space program), all schools in the Washington, D.C. area (including St. John’s) were given a half-holiday.

Faculty Socials in Pittsburgh
In Pittsburgh, the various Brothers of Central Catholic, South Hills Catholic, and North Catholic High Schools have been engaged in round-robin religious faculty socials and get-togethers during the school year. North Catholic (conducted by the Society of Mary, known as the Marianists) initiated these innovating and friendly gatherings in December, with South’s turn in February, and with Central to be the host after Easter.

Christi Nearing Completion
Mater Christi HS (Queens), despite the growing pains of a just-opened high school, is approaching completion. One frigid December, at the morning bell, there was no heat and ironically, when the Brothers turned on their water faucets, the only type of water which flowed from either spigot was….scalding hot water.

St. John’s First in TB
Sometime in early 1962, St. John’s Training School (Uxbridge, Ontario) maintained its reputation of being a “pioneering” facility when it registered another first: it became the first training school to establish its own tuberculosis prevention surveys. Because many of the boys come from areas which may have a minimum of health services, and some come from homes where tuberculosis may develop, such surveys will help Ontario’s ongoing effort prevent the disease.

Listen to this news item from CBA (Lincroft) regarding a few details of the “innovations” at the Sophomore-Junior Retreat that October: At High Mass, with the music sung by the students, “[the] priest facing the congregation; each boy placed his host in ciborium before Mass; two boys from congregation brought water and wine to altar at Offertory.”

New Mall in Detroit, St. Joseph’s Plays
St. Joseph’s HS (Detroit) now has some modern urban renewal in its immediate vicinity, with nearby Orleans Street becoming a boulevard with a spacious mall. At the dedication and groundbreaking ceremonies, attended by the mayor and the French consul, the St. Joseph band played both French and American songs.

Saturnalia Festival in Connecticut
Brother Chrysostom Stephen’s Latin Department at St. Bernard’s HS (Uncasville, CT) held its annual “Saturnalia” festival in late December/early January. A banquet was held in the school auditorium with the table and chairs arranged in authentic Roman style, and with the toga-clad boys conversing in Latin.

Holy Name’s Cellar Flooding
At Holy Name Grade School (NY), the cellar flooded and the Brothers thought it was a break in the water main. But one of the Brothers, adept in plumbing, shut off the valve, stopping the deluge. The pipe leading to an outside faucet had frozen and had broken.

Ascension on the Radio
The boys’ choir of Ascension Grade School (NY) will appear on an hour-long show on radio station WEVD-AM. The singers recently made an LP (long-playing) record album for Christmas season on the Mirrasonic label.

St. Patrick’s Numbers Up…Thanks to Dominican Brothers
85 eighth graders applied to St. Patrick’s HS (Newburgh, NY; a Lasallian school). In addition to the usual entrance test questions, each was asked to write, “Why do you want to attend St. Patrick’s?” One prospect, however, rendered a less-than-stellar answer: “Because Sister says that the Dominican Brothers are good teachers.”

The newly reorganized La Salle Glee Club at La Salle Academy (2nd Street, NYC) sang so well at the school’s Christmas entertainment that representatives from several city banks and the Pennsylvania Railroad terminal requested their presence for renditions during the holidays.

La Salle Albany Chapel Dedicated
La Salle School (Albany) had its new chapel dedicated by Bishop Scully in a ceremony. Bishop Scully had been making weekly visits to inspect the progress while it was being constructed.

La Salle Academy (2nd Street, NYC) is the setting for a school scene drama on the ABC-TV police series entitled “The Naked City”; it will be televised in late January or early February.

Francis = Jesuit = Christian Brothers
On their exam in Religion, students in a class at St. Thomas the Apostle Grade School (Harlem) had the question, “To what Order did St. Francis belong?” The answer, written by one boy, was a vocational gem: “St. Francis was a Jesuit of the Order of the Christian Brothers.”

Things are booming at St. Raymond’s HS (Bronx). The big Open House at the Boys’ High School for parishioners and friends drew 4,000 people.

St. John’s Santa Float 2nd Place
On December 9, 1961, St. John’s Training School (Uxbridge, Ontario) entered a float in the local Santa Claus parade, and it took second place. The float featured jolly old Santa and his reindeer.

Kiwani Members Visit St. John’s
Eighteen members of the Kiwani Clubs of Uxbridge and Peterborough were guests of St. John’s Training School on January 30. After a demonstration of gymnastics performed by the boys, supper, and a reception, Brother Sexbury Adrian welcomed the guests and arranged a tour of the building and grounds.
