Yes, they are spoons to us . . . but musical instruments in the nimble hands of Brother Flavian Albert Lautenslager (1914-1977). So beloved was he to the students of Hudson Catholic HS (Jersey City) that the 1971 “Hawk” yearbook was dedicated to him—including four pages of images of just Brother Al!
They were totally enthralled when he periodically entertained the troops with the spoons at a pep rally or assembly. Brother Al was the last Brother of the Legacy Baltimore District to wear the traditional calotte (skullcap) during his schooltime duties.
He died way to young great person
Just loved the guy. He was warm, witty, sarcastic and whimsical. He never lost his youthfulness. Had a mean drumstick. Most of his students will know what I am referring to.
He was unique and a truly great guy who cared for his students. Loved to hear him play those spoons.
