The 8th grade football team of St. Francis Vocational School (Eddington, PA) advanced as far as the semi-finals in the playoffs for the Philadelphia Archdiocesan CYO championship, for the first time in school history. The same team also won the 8th grade title in football competition for Lower Bucks County.

La Salle College High Baseball Field

The new baseball field (Meehan Field) at La Salle College HS opened in time for spring practice. The tennis courts there will be available for their first full season.

No Cassius Clay for Novices

The junior novices at Barrytown (NY) were not allowed to stay up to watch the big Sonny Liston vs. Cassius Clay boxing match on TV, so they staged their own boxing match between two of the students.

Loughlin Water Polo

The water polo team of Bishop Loughlin HS (Brooklyn) enjoys much success; they defeated Yale’s varsity three times in the last three outings.

From Mater Christi HS: “Mater Christi boasts…possession of the district’s first trampoline. It also has the highest percentage of Brothers semi-incapacitated with stiff necks, sprained ankles, and torn cartilages.”

CBA Syracuse Wins Basketball Title

CBA (Syracuse) won its first “City League” basketball crown since 1954-1955 and posted a 19-2 record. Then CBA won the All-City title in overtime in front of 6,100 fans.

La Salle Institute (Troy) won the hockey championship of the Eastern District League.

Manhattan Beats Fordham

When Manhattan College defeated Fordham in basketball this season, the resident students of Manhattan College poured into the quadrangle and — equipped with a large drum and some trumpets and trombones — wended their way down to the corner and then paraded home again, cheering (“The Ram is dead!”) and singing (“When the Saints Come Marching In”).
