The band of Canton (OH) Central Catholic provided excellent entertainment at the halftime of the first-ever Hall of Fame football game in Canton.

Meehan Field at La Salle College

Meehan Field at La Salle College HS (Wyndmoor) was dedicated on October 26 to the memory of Sheriff Austin Meehan, the father of Jack Meehan (donor). The field accommodates intramurals, team practices, baseball, JV football, and the marching band.

St. Joseph’s Detroit, No New Freshman

With St. Joseph’s HS (Detroit) not accepting any new freshmen in September 1963, it likely means that their 32-0 loss to De La Salle Collegiate in the “Oil Can Classic” was the last meeting in the traditional rivalry that extended through 35 years.

Basketball at St. Francis

Two basketball teams from St. Francis Vocational School (Eddington, PA) now compete in the local CYO. The new school colors are green and gold, with Wildcats as the new team nickname.

DC Championship

The city championship game for Washington high school football, played in the new D.C. Stadium (renamed RFK Stadium), drew the largest crowd in the athletic history of Washington—over 51,000. The game sadly ended in a series of riots (essentially racial and likely fueled by St. John’s victory over Eastern HS). St. John’s is given commendation for good sportsmanship over this unfortunate episode, but city title games have been cancelled for the coming year as a precaution.

Troy vs. Albany

The annual “Little Service” football game features La Salle Institute (Troy) vs. Christian Brothers Academy (Albany). The entire student bodies of both schools put on a halftime marching exhibition.

Football on Thanksgiving

De La Salle Academy (Newport, RI) upset Rogers HS on Thanksgiving, 14-12. DLS thus won its first city championship in ten years.

La Salle Oakdale Gets a Boat

La Salle Military Academy (Oakdale) received a gift of a 26-foot-long cabin cruiser. It is the gift of Walter Sichel, president of the company which distributes Christian Brothers Wine in the eastern US.
