Pittsburgh, PA – The spirit of our Founder and the teachings of our Pope unite at Central Catholic in a project coordinated by Brother Eric Henderson. Scrap metal discarded by those affiliated with the school is collected, sorted, and sold. This recycling effort generates in excess of $1,000 annually from the close to 20,000 pounds of copper, brass, aluminum, and steel that is collected. In addition to helping the environment as encouraged by Laudato Sí, students at Central benefit directly because the revenue accrued forms a tuition assistance fund created by Brother Eric and his colleagues in the Chemistry Department. The money is designated to pay school expenses for a senior whose family experiences financial misfortune during the young man’s final year at Central. The accompanying photos show Brother Eric in his chem lab chatting with students, in his workshop (once shared with Brother Herman Paul), and some of the metal grouped for sale.
