First Financial of Maryland Federal Credit Union partners with Calvert Hall for the opening of its 5th student-run branch
10/18/11 – Towson MD – On October 18, 2011 at 9:00 a.m., First Financial of Maryland Federal Credit Union and Calvert Hall College High School celebrated the opening of a student-run branch. In addition to teaching young adults how to manage their money, the student-run branches provide valuable business experience for students considering a career in the financial industry.
The Cardinal Branch, named for the school’s mascot, serves the students, faculty and staff of the School. It is open for business before school each morning and is run by student interns and a faculty advisor. Members utilizing the branch are able to make deposits, open new accounts, make limited cash withdrawals and receive general information about all of the credit union services. All five high school branches of First Financial FCU operate in an off-line environment with final processing of transactions taking place at the main office of the Credit Union. First Financial also has student-run branch locations in Dundalk High School, Lansdowne High School, Eastern Technical High School and Chesapeake High School in Baltimore County.
The student-run branches are just one of the many youth programs First Financial FCU has developed to address the growing need for financial literacy among young adults. The Credit Union also works with high schools within their field of membership to teach classes on financial matters such as credit management, maintaining a checking account, understanding credit & debit cards and choosing a financial institution, to name a few.
